Linux Deathmarch Part 4

1/4/02

Come here little Laptop. I've got something for you...Hmmm...I hit a brick wall almost straight away. The 'n' series didn't load properly and refused to boot so I had to start again, which I did several weeks later (after the wedding and a storm of TMA deadlines had been and gone), using a menu driven installation to avoid the disk 'n8', which, contrary to the readme file, is not small enough to fit on a disk. It still didn't like it much, but is at least booting now. The damage to the disk seems to have come back to haunt me, but I don't know how bad this problem will turn out to be. Gulp.

Yeah, and here's a poser: I blithely assumed I was just going to have to use ftp to get the other disk series but of course I have to manually configure the modem to dial the ISP, hand over the password and establish a connection before I even get started and how in the name of Torvalds am I supposed to do that???

For closure, you can read 'Ownage' which is a sort of epilogue to this series and details my final more-or-less successful installation of Slackware version 3 on the little Tosh.
